Toxic positivity isn’t really positivity and will only attract more emotional repression and experiences that prevent you from experiencing really happiness.

First off, it creates shame. When you force a positive outlook on pain means you are encouraging a person to remain silent about what they are struggling with. Most people don’t want to be viewed as a drag, so you are face with two choices. One, be honest and brave, or, two, pretend like everything is find. Most people are tempted to choose number two. Shame exists where there is denial, secrets, and hiding.

Shame cripples the human spirit and is one of the most uncomfortable feelings that you can experience. Oftentimes, we don’t even realize that we are feeling shame. If you want to know if you are feeling shame, ask yourself this, “If they knew (state something about yourself) about me, what would they think?” If you are able to fill in the blank with anything, then there is a good chance you feel shame about it.

Secondly, it causes suppressed emotions. There are a lot of psychological studies that have found that denying or hiding your feels causes more stress on your body and an increased difficulty avoiding that feeling or thought. The studies they have performed on the subject has found that expressing a broad range of emotions, even ones that aren’t positive, having words to express how your feeling, and facial expressions for them, helps people to regular their stress response.

When we try to not show a certain part of ourselves, we will end up creating a public persona for the outside world to see. This façade may look cheery and telling everybody “Everything happens for a reason, and it is what it is,” but what you are actually doing is denying your truth. In reality, life sometimes hurts. If you are feeling angry, and you don’t acknowledge them, they will get buried deep inside of you. These suppressed emotions show up later as depression, anxiety, or a physical illness.

It is very important to acknowledge the reality of your emotions by verbalizing them and getting them out of your body. This will help you to remain, healthy, sane, and relieves you are the tension that is created by suppressing your truth. Once you are able to honor how you feel, you will embrace all of yourself, the good side and the bad said. And being able to accept yourself just as you are will create a path to robust emotional life.

Third, it creates isolation and relationship problems. When you deny your truth, you start to live an inauthentic life with yourself and the world. You lose the connection with yourself, which makes it hard for others to relate with you or connect. While you might come off as unbreakable, on the inside you are scared and simply want a hug.
